A visit to Japan Self Defence Forces (JSDF)

JSDF is the military of Japan whose aim is to protect and give an initial defense in case Japan is attacked. We had an unique chance to visit their base in Beppu, view the training grounds and enjoy soldier's lunch.

The general public has some what negative image of the forces. They would prefer to see the country without any militaristic grouping. To make the image better, in addition to ordinary military training, JSDF has engaged in helping the community. They, for example build roads and schools, carry out peace keeping operations and rescue missions to find lost people from forests.

The reason why they allowed a group of international students to enter their base was most likely also linked to improving their public image. One of our students was asked at the end of the visit,
"Now that you have been here, has your image of JSDF changed?"
A question that baldly indicates their intentions of image construction. Indeed, they received us with a very hospitable and friendly manner, leaving little space for negative thoughts. Despite that a question remains: Can a truly friendly military exist?

We met the camp commander, and some students went into asking quite sensitive questions such as:
"As the JSDF is solely serving for self defense, isn't it contradicting to have troops in Iraq or in any other place around the world?"

"What are the future challenges or scenarios that JSDF is likely to face?"

"As JSDF runs in a voluntary basis, how does JSDF lure new soldiers, and has there been a drop in the number of applicants?"

"Do they think the physical and mental condition of newcomers is worse today than, say 20 years ago?"

The answers, tough presented in a direct militaristic tone were satisfactory. Understandably the camp commander, a Colonel of his rank circumvented skillfully around any topic that included his personal views or opinions. What was more satisfactory, however, was the food they served. The lunch that honestly tasted better than looked was a well-thought way to get us distracted and at the same time rise our spirits.

We asked several soldiers why they had joined JSDF. A common reply was "We wanted to do something for our country". One man, in addition to doing something for the country, added saying, "This is a good environment for those who want to become more confident and grow interpersonally.", not too bad motive at all, eh?

Do you have an impression of JSDF? Aspiring to join them?

One lecture away from christmas holiday

Close to three months in University. Feels longer than it is. Not that it would have been boring-absolutely not, but because we've done such a heap of things and attended several events, alongside with ordinary studying.

The Christmas holiday started already for quite many students. Officially it begins on the 25. of December, and last until the 7th of January, so close to two weeks in total. Many of the exchange students use this time to travel around Japan, some even fly overseas or return home to rejoin with their family. A common direction to take from Oita seems to be north to Honsu, and therein Osaka-Kyoto-Nagoya-Tokyo. For the holiday, Yumiko and I have modest plans:

  • 23th, view the Beppu Christmas Fireworks Fantasia,
  • 24th, go for a restaurant date in Oita,
  • 27th, see and listen TAO, a group of taiko-drum performers in Taketa-city near Oita,
  • 28th, visit Yumiko's family in Nagoya for the New Year. Hopefully we can help them in the grand-cleaning,
Even though I've had it many times, it is slightly wistful to think of end of year celebrations in Finland. Being with family, enjoying calmness and traditional dishes, seeing everything covered by bright newly rained snow. Now it's time for end-of-year in Japan. It said to be one the largest festival, if not the largest in the whole of Japanese calendar. Let's enjoy it with open mind!

Otobarunotaki (乙原の滝), a waterfall almost secret

Surprisingly near. Only a stone throw away from Beppu city, behind this nearly abandoned amusement park, one can find an astonishing 60 meter high natural waterfall.

Surprise! This waterfall is created by an underground spring up at the top of the cliff.

Slippery and wet stones aren't for sitting. The surrounding ground is extremely damp and the nature and vegetation around it is relatively rich in variety.

Refresh yourself! Falling water makes a breeze strong enough to raise your coat and hair up. It maybe quite refreshing during the hot summers of Kyushu but at this time the breeze seeps quickly into bones.

If the waterfall is beautiful so is the pathway up there.

At this time of the year many of the deciduous trees have dropped their leafs.

We were fortunate to see some of them still in bright autumn colors. Thanks goes to our dear active upstairs neighbors! They suggested the trip.

Any business travellers to Beppu?

Need a place to stay? If you're heading to Beppu for a meeting or conference there is a lovely looking business hotel right in front of the main station.

...probably affordable for my budget.

Pyöräretki

Päätin mennä Beppuun pyörällä koska sää oli tosi hyvä!

On sinne päin pyörätiekin!

Matkan puolessa välissä, on kaunis ranta!

Lopulta pääsin Beppuun ja kävelin Bepussa vähän aikaa ja tulin takaisin.

Bepun kuuluisan henkilön patsas.

Käsi-onsen.

Haluaisin tulla Onsenille talvella!!

On aika mukava asua Japanissakin!
